This year, "Macau 2049" is exploring new horizons this year, taking part in the Wuzhen Theater Festival. When creativity truly becomes part of an artwork's DNA, art will transcend geography and shine through on any stage.
The Wuzhen Theater Festival stands alongside the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the Avignon Festival as one of the world's most influential theater events. The highly competitive stage this year featured two acts of "Macau 2049" - Khoomei · Ethereal and Yangge · Robots - in more than 50 performances, captivating audiences with raw creativity and bold innovation.
On the vast water stage at Wuzhen, Khoomei · Ethereal presented the sound of the vast steppe, letting those primal overtones resonate through the watery landscape of a canal town. Yangge · Robots was performed in an intimate setting, allowing the audience to see and feel every fine detail of the performers' movements.
"Macau 2049" in Wuzhen is a prized example of how creativity and innovation can drive culture forward. Starting from Macau, the performances adapted, transformed and reinvented themselves across different settings, yet never lost their profound impact. Striking as they were, however, the "Macau 2049" performances were only a “chapter”, whereas Macau remains the ultimate home of "Macau 2049".
Art is no longer something lofty. Whether on the water stage of Wuzhen or in the cityscape of Macau, the audience is no longer mere spectators, but co-creators in a cultural experiment. "Macau 2049" evolves with different settings, yet that sense of awe driven by creativity never fades.
The performances in Wuzhen represented one cross-section of "Macau 2049". To fully experience the cultural odyssey across time, and to witness how creativity and innovation pulse through every single detail, you have to be in Macau.
